mccaskill who is suspended from her job broke her silence. >> i was shocked, hurt, insulted. i was humiliated. >> reporter: this is the background. after maryland's legislature narrowly passed a law to legalize gay marriage, opponents circulated petitions to stop the legislation. upon hearing a sermon on marriage at her church, dr. mccaskill signed one of the petitions upsetting some in the university community. >> and she of all people should be open to any person of any divorce backgrounds, so signing something like this against a group of students where she is supposed to be supporting them opposed to undermining them. doesn't make sense. >> reporter: the administration suspended with pay as chief diversity officer and that upset others in the university community. >> i don't think she should have been suspended and think it's her right and freedom of speech to believe whatever she believes and sign what she wants to sign. >> reporter: mccaskill said

when a lesbian faculty member demanded the administration reprimand her, show proposed another path. >> i offered to have a campuswide dialogue on this sensitive issue. i believe in civil discourse. >> reporter: dr. mccaskill said she's not anti-gay but pro- democracy and declined to publicly say which way she will vote december 6th on the issue of gay marriage in maryland. her suspension from the job at gallaudet has been condemned from many directions, including the very conservative family research council, the rather liberal pro-gay marriage governor of maryland, martin o'malley. a group of black legislator voted both ways on the black marriage law and condemned the mccaskill suspension saying people's livelihood shouldn't be jeopardized for exercising the right of referendum. gallaudet characterized the suspension as prudent and

inviting mccaskill back to talk about high she might return as chief diversity officer. mccaskill's attorney said his client has been harmed by the ordeal but he's willing to talk and that is where the story stands right now. >> thank you for the update. big delays for riders on metro's redline after a train hit and killed a man at the farragut station. metro believed the man intentionally jumped in front of the chain and as a result, they forced the single track in both directions between judiciary square and dupont circle. things are now back to normal. one person is dead after a shooting in fairfax county and that happened in gets court. police arrested charles hamilton who is accused of shooting his 68-year-old sister ruth allen. he lied at the home on get's court. investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a personal dispute. another big story. day two in the trial of two

police officers accused of assaulting a university of maryland student back in 2010. today, the state called four police officers, including two from internal affairs, to testify about the investigation and the behavior of the accused police officers. fox 5s paul wagner is live at 5 in upper marlboro with the latest. paul, take it away. >> reporter: the jury was given a lot of information today about officers reginald baker and james harrison and their behavior in the hours before the incident, at the time of the incident and the days after the incident. one fact they were told is the fact that harrison and baker never reported the use of force against john mckenna that night, against the general orders of the police department. two of the officers who arrested john mckenna in the minutes after he was struck by a shield and riot baton testified for the prosecution today. he told the court that he didn't hear the striking

officers, baker and harrison, make any commands or a command to show his hands or get on the ground before pushing him up against the wall. another officer, sergeant mckinney told the court, he got a phone call from baker after this video was made public. mckinney said baker apologized to him saying it was re-- he was remorseful, not happy or proud o. cross-examination, mckinney asked him what baker was sorry for. >> he said he was sorry mckinney and others were being investigated by internal affairs. a third officer, internal affairs lieutenant charles wallsel to the court when he questioned james harrison on the left leaving court and showed him the video, harrison said he was only a witness and not one of the striking officers. the next day, hair concalled -- harrison called him back wanting to know what equipment to turn in, feeling his suspension was imminent. the state's last witness was an expert in thous of force.

a retired maryland state trooper who told the court in his opinion, baker and hairton use ised excessive force against mckenna and noting the student was not aggressive and kept his hands up when police approached. mckenna was arrested but all charges were dropped. that expert was questioned extensively by the defense attorneys this afternoon and went on for over a hour and ended a short while ago. the prosecution said they wanted to some followup questions. in fact, the state was supposed to rest this afternoon and that is going to take place tomorrow. we expect the defense to pick up tomorrow morning and begin their case. will? >> all right, we know you'll stay on top of the trial for us. thank you. we're hours away from the second presidential debate. it may keep arguments to a minimum but the event is critical for president obama and mitt romney. craig bosswell is live in hempstead, new york, with the

latest. craig. >> reporter: shawn, good eving to you. yeah, high-stakes, high-drama here at the university. less than four hours and uniting until president obama and mitt romney take the stage for the second of their three debates, taking place exactly three weeks before election day. tonight, it's a town hall-style debate. only the moderator will know the questions in advance. >> the set and format focused on the 80 people that will be here asking questions of the candidates. y that will be the ones whose questions the candidate will answer with two-minute answers each and two minutes to discuss the issue of it further. >> reporter: governor romney's strong performance -- performance in the first debate gave him a much-needed boost in nationwide polls and he'll try to keep the momentum tonight. >> i don't think he needs to go after president obama. i think what he did so well a week and a half ago was make his own case in details what he would do as president to address the problems. >> reporter: president obama has been prepping for the debate in williamsburg, virginia, the last few days and

is expected to be more aggressive this time around. >> the president is his harshest critic and looked back at the debate. he knows that he can do better. he's energized and is excited about the opportunity. i think the american people should expect to see a more passionate president obama laying out the case for why he's better for the middle class. >> reporter: he allowed for the a followup by the moderator. during tonight's 90-minute debate, it's expected about between 11 to 13 of the audience members of the 80 or so audience members will have to get in their questions. back to you. >> let me ask you about the members. are they random people who got to in in and got lucky or are they carefully selected? >> reporter: carefully slicked by gallop, they went and looked through undecided voters, the polling process. once they were convinced these were undecided voters, then they were allowed in. the questions were submitted to on in writing to the moderator.

. a major crash on route 3 in maryland put 11 people in the hospital. it happened about 7:30 in morning in crofton, in anne arundel county. it involved seven cars and closed the road in both

directions. sky fox overhead and about an hour later, traffic was barbie let -- barely getting by. injuries were minor and no word on what caused the crash. this is another accident. three people were flown to local hospitals, including two children after the crash here in clarksburg. it happened at little seneca parkway and route 355. the pickup was flipped on the side and within minutes, it was righted. investigators have not released the cause of this either. the price you pay for speed negligent district might be changing. a d.c. councilman introduced a bill that would cut speed camera fines. bob barnard is in the newsroom. how would it hurt? >> reporter: like it does in mont groomery and prince georges county, with a fine that most consider reasonable. the proposed changes in the district come as d.c. police prepare to set up in speed --

more speed camera across the city. >> reporter: the district has been making a mint off of drivers. this is on 295 near blue plains and at times splashing away every few secs. the speed limit, 50 miles an hour here. >> and these are everywhere, a nuisance. >> reporter: they're on a 25 miles per hour zone on 19th -- 19th street southeast near rfk stadium. >> come o two, three miles over the stadium and that is going to flash on you. that is ridiculous. and this is not fair. >> reporter: the fifth beef is about the amount and sum of the fine. >> i got one for 1.5 a couple of months ago and i am okay with it. i think it's steep. >> reporter: the complaints led two d.c. council members to create a task force to look into the matter. >> the automated enforcement is ultimately and uniformly about safety and protecting the public, but because of the amount of the fines, we have been worried that people are thinking that it's just a money

grab. >> reporter: the plan would be to lower fines to $50 and violations over 50 miles per hour over the posted limit, more in line with maximum fines of $40 in maryland. there are no speed cameras in virginia and despite the fact that the d.c. traffic fatality rates dropped 75% during the past 11 years of automated speed enforcement, council member tommy list said that complaints about have been about the bigger picture. >> it undermines the relationship between the government and government and we freed to restore that and be responsible about it. >> reporter: council mcnairy chay said -- council member mary chase said they need to be temporary. >> if we get less compliant, we will revisit it. >> reporter: she said the $150 fines issued when drivers get

. it's the kind of things that happen in a movie, but a major art heist played out for real. seven popular paintings ripped off from the museum before dawn. amy kellogg has details on this multimillion theft. >> reporter: it's a stunning blow to the art world. dutch police confirming seven well-known modern paintings stolen from a rotterdam museum before dawn. >> and somewhere up the street and on a tuesday morning. we have a report -- of a museum in rotterdam and after the police arrived, we found out that seven paintings were stolen. >> reporter: the daring hoist is one of the largest in years in the netherlands. and comes as the museum is celebrating the 20th anniversary.

thieves bypassing a state-of- the-art security system walking off with pieces worth hundreds of millions by picasso, monet, and matisse among anothers of the -- others. >> it's quick and so thieves were not able to steal many paintings, but, unfortunately, they managed to get out a few pantings. >> reporter: the works were part of the triteop foundation collection, including dozens of other famous paintings by artists like salvador dali and andy warhol. all being exhibited publicly as a group for the first time. authorities now reviewing surveillance video and trying to figure out how the crocks managed to pull off the sophisticated crime. they say that thoughs have limited options other -- that thieves have limited options other than black mailing owners in the museum. >> and they remain in the crime scene for many, many years and main, because they can't sell them, they might destroy them. again, it's impossible to sell them. >> reporter: the paintings have since been registered internationally as stolen. investigators are calling for

. we have a health alert about the outbreak of fungal american inkitis. the concerns are growing and the fda wants doctors to contact every patient who received any type of injection from the new england pharmaceutical company and comes as the agency officially investigates two more drugs. jonathan sery has the latest. >> reporter: the number of meningitis cases continues to rise with two more confirmed cases in florida and the number of cases nationwide also increasing. now, another disturbing revelation. the food and drug is expanding its investigation into the compounding center, the pharmaceutical company responsible for the batch of

contaminateed steroids shots linked to the meningitis outbreak. the fda is looking into two more drugs from the compounding company and is asking doctors to contact patients who got go any injections made by the necc. the fda said the new warning is based on reports of a patient with possible meningitis who received a different steroids shot than the ones linked to the outbreak in death. the fda also reporting a case of non-meningitis in a patient treated with a cardiac drug. the latest cases are still under investigation and have not officially connected them to the necc. they aren't taking chance. the necc facing legal trouble as well. a tennessee woman and her husband filing a $15 million lawsuit against the company. she claims to have contracted meningitis after receiving a contaminated steroids shot and has been recovering in the

hospital for almost a month. >> never dreamed anything like this would happen. i am sure none of the other patients thought it would happen either. >> reporter: the tennessee attorney expects to foil a dozen additional lawsuits in the coming days. tennessee is the state hardest hit in the meningitis outbreak, with more than 50 cases reported in that state alone. in atlanta, jonathan sery, fox news. >> alarming and revealing new information released from the longest followup today isy to date on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. it found adult men diagnosed with adhd have children with less education, lower income and that is not all. rick hughes is a clinical psychologist and mother of an adult son with adhd and happens to be the ceo of children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or c.h.a.d. good to have you here, ma'em. >> thank you, will. >> the findings show a portion of boys with adhd have greater difficulty in life.

right now. the stage is set for round two, between president obama and republican nominee mitt romney. in just a few hours, the second presidential debate kicks off at hofstra university, presenting different goals. mitt romney is trying to keep the momentum going and president obama trying to gain a lot of that ground he lost during the lackluster performance in denver. and tom fitzgerald has more now. >> reporter: when you consider the president enjoyed big leads in the polls prior to the first debate and dropped sharply off after it conclude, there are some signs tonight that mitt romney is really looking to keep the momentum going. you have to say that the president tonight also feels am say way. he needs a turnaround. the romney campaign is expecting a more fiery president obama while the obama campaign is trying to get the candidate back on track.
